Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and any other important fact about your health . These factors may affect how you should use this medication.

Drowsiness / reduced warning: People taking bupropion should avoid hazardous machine operation (including vehicles) until you are sure that the medication does not affect their mental agility, the sentence, or physical coordination.

Heart disease: There is no experience establishing the safety of bupropion for use by people with a recent history of myocardial infarction or unstable heart disease.

Identical medications: Wellbutrin SR ® and Zyban ® contain the same active ingredient (bupropion). Anyone have one of these drugs should not take the other or any other product containing bupropion, as the risk of seizures increases with increasing dose.

Liver disease: Because bupropion is cleared from the body through the liver and kidney, caution and lower doses should be used by people with liver disease or kidney disease. Bupropion is not recommended for use by people with severe liver disease unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

Seizure risk: Bupropion should be used with extreme caution by people who have an increased risk of seizures. Things that increase the risk of seizures include:

• Abrupt withdrawal of alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives or other
• Addiction to cocaine, stimulants or opiates (eg morphine)
• Diabetes treated with insulin or oral medications
• Excessive use of alcohol
• History of head trauma or seizures (including epilepsy)
• Tumors of the brain or spinal cord
• The use of other medications that make seizures more likely (eg, antipsychotics, antidepressants, lithium, theophylline, steroids)
• Use of nonprescription stimulants or appetite suppressants

Stopping the medication: Stopping this medication suddenly may cause side effects. If you are thinking of ending the medication, consult your doctor first.

Agitated or suicidal behavior: Adults and children taking this medication may feel agitated (restless, anxious, aggressive, emotional, and feel as they do not), or may want to hurt themselves or others. These symptoms can occur within several weeks after people start taking the medicine. People should be closely monitored by their doctor for emotional and behavioral changes.

Pregnancy: The safety of bupropion during pregnancy has not been established. It has been reported that babies born to mothers who have taken such drugs during the last trimester of pregnancy may be adversely affected. Doctors and pregnant women should carefully consider the benefits and risks of all treatment options.

Breast-feeding: Bupropion passes into breast milk. Because this medication presents risks to nursing infants, a decision must be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue bupropion, taking into account the importance of medication to the mother.

Children: Safety and efficacy of bupropion has not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age. The use of this medicine in children under 18 years may cause emotional and behavioral changes such as suicidal thoughts and behavior.
